Dr Samira Omar

Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR)

Dr. Samira Omar has been employed by KISR since 1973.  She holds a Ph.D. in Wild Land Resource Sciences and M.S in Range Management from the University of California, Berkeley, USA.  Her B.Sc. is in Botany and Chemistry from the University of Kuwait.  Dr. Omar has above forty years’ experience in management of applied scientific research related to biology, ecology, environment and sustainable development.  She was the Director of Food Resources and Marine Sciences Division of KISR for twelve years (2001-2013) to supervise R&D of six scientific programs.  Currently, she is the Technical Program Director of a UNCC-based KISR contractual project entitled “Kuwait Environmental Remediation Program”.

She published 27 books, 32 refereed papers and contributed to 82 conference proceedings.  She participated in 123 Conferences, Symposia and Workshops. She was an invited and guest speaker in local, regional and international conferences, symposia and workshops.

Dr. Omar holds the positions; 1) IUCN Regional Councilor for West Asia Region, 2) an Elected Member of the Board of Directors for the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) for Asia Region, and 3) Vice President of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).
